04. Defiance against Tyranny

The Nova music festival in the desert near Kibbutz Re’im, in the area of the border with Gaza, was cruelly attacked by Hamas terrorists on October 7th. There were roughly 3,500 young festival attendees, and over 300 were killed by the terrorists, and many taken hostage. One story from the festival has stood out – the story of a man who saved everyone he could, and paid with his own life – Aner.
את הסיפור של ענר שפירא שמעו הרבה אנשים, כי הסיפור מייצג גבורה אל מול אכזריות, ומחשבה צלולה בתוך מצב של כאוס. במהלך הבריחה מהמחבלים במסיבת "נובה" ליד קיבוץ רעים, קבוצה של אנשים הסתתרו בתוך מיגונית. מהרגע שהגיע למיגונית וכבר מצא שם אנשים, ענר מיד לקח פיקוד, הסביר שהוא מיחידה מבצעית ושכבר אין מה לדאוג, וכאשר מחבלים התחילו לזרוק רימונים פנימה, הוא זרק אותם החוצה בחזרה אליהם, עד שאחד התפוצץ עליו. למרות הסיטואציה הנוראית אליו נקלע, בשום שלב ענר לא הרגיש חסר אונים. הוא עשה כל מה שביכולתו להתנגד לרשע ולשמור על אחרים. בסיפורי חנוכה יש תיאורים של זוועות אכזריות והתעללות, והעמידה נגדם. ענר שפירא מייצג את הרוח העכשווית של ההתנגדות היהודית האיתנה למעשים הנבזים של אז, וכמובן של היום.

As young people ran through the desert looking for a way to escape the dozens of terrorists shooting in every direction, a group came across a migunit, a small shelter that can be found in the area for use in case of rocket attacks. These shelters turned, in so many cases, into death traps, when terrorists found them. In this story, we not only hear of Aner’s heroism in his actions, attempting to protect the people in the shelter he was in, but also in his calming demeanor as he took command of the situation and made sure to try and calm everyone down, saying that he is from a combat unit and is going to help them. He did help, and saved many of them, and in the video we can hear from many of the people who were there with him about his last moments and describing what he did. Despite the horrific situation in which he found himself, Aner did not feel helpless.He did everything he could to defy evil, fight back and protect others. The story of Hanukkah tells of terrible torturous deaths that were inflicted upon Jews who resisted Hellenic edicts, and in his heroic actions, Aner revives this resilience in the face of cruelty, resilience that was shown both then and now.
